Sidewalk Inventory in the Heights

We like to walk. When the weather cooperates, we can easily get in 5 or more miles in a day just walking around the neighborhood. We walk to the bank, to the grocery store, the hardware store, or just around the ’hood. There are two huge irritants on our walks. The terrible drivers who refuse to yield right-of-way to a pedestrian, and the abysmal quality of the sidewalks. This app documents the sidewalk quality.

Summary

I audited and photographed about 24.4 miles of sidewalk in the Heights, and discovered that right at 70% of the sidewalk is in good or acceptable condition. However, that implies that 30% is not easily traversable by someone in a wheelchair, or with a walker. Additionally, I determined that there are only 21 blocks out of the 301 I walked that would easily allow someone who is disabled to get from corner to corner. Essentially, if you are wheelchair-bound in the Heights, you will have to use the street to go anywhere.
